Hair Color Levels. The level system of hair color is a universal system used by colorists, cosmetologists and hair color manufacturers to standardize hair color charts. Level simply refers to how light or dark a hair color is–the lower the number, the darker the hair. The number ranges from 1-12, with 1 being darkest black, and 12 lightest.

Hair Color Levels 1-10. Hair color levels always use these numbers to describe the depth of the shade in the hair. Basically, the color level is the description of how dark the color is and this could range from 1 to 10 where we have 1 as the darkest and 10 as the lightest.

Navigating the world of hair color levels and hair dye codes can be difficult for amateurs since each company tends to produce its own system. Some will have numbers from 1-7, others from 1-10, and still more from 1-12. Dyes aren’t easy to sort out either.
