Hair Color Levels. The level system of hair color is a universal system used by colorists, cosmetologists and hair color manufacturers to standardize hair color charts. Level simply refers to how light or dark a hair color is–the lower the number, the darker the hair. The number ranges from 1-12, with 1 being darkest black, and 12 lightest.
While tones are warm and cool, levels are dark and light. Your hair’s black and brown pigments determine level. Our Radiant Cream Color ranges from level 2 to level 10 on the hair color chart, with 2 indicating our deepest black and 10 our lightest blonde.

Hair Color Levels and Tones Chart. For the sake of this post, we’ll be looking at Indola Professional dye as an example. For this brand, 1 is the code for an ash tone and 5 is for mahogany tone. In contrast, a Schwarzkopf Igora Royal dye takes 5 to be a golden tone. It is important to have the color chart for the particular dye brand you are.
Hair Color Levels. When picking your new perfect look, start with identifying your base color also known as color level. Since hair experts don’t recommend going more than two levels lighter or darker in a single session, you should opt for something within four levels of your current base.. Generally, hair color numbers go from jet-black (1) to the lightest blonde (10) with dark, medium.
Within each color family, there are light, medium and dark levels. For example: light blonde, medium blonde and dark blonde. While every hair color brand has its own level numbering system, generally black is Level 1 or 2, and lightest blond is the highest level number.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to stay within two levels of your starting hair color level. Color Theory Part 2: Tone. Tone is measured in warm, cool, and neutral.
